FLORIOGRAPHY - FLOWERS AND THEIR MEANINGS

Just like how different people’s names have different, unique meanings, each flower/plant is the same.

For many of those familiar with the Harry potter fandom, you might remember a fan-theory which decoded the first words Snape said to Harry: “What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” An asphodel is a type of lily; and in accordance with Victorian flower language (the origin of the ‘language of flowers’), this specific type of lily means “my regrets follow you to the grave”, and wormwood means “absence”. Combined, Snape’s first words to Harry are actually to his late mother, roughly translating to “I bitterly regret Lily’s death.”

Below are just some of the most common flowers used by florists, so that you might be able to write an equally beautiful and eloquent message to the recipient of your floral selection

CHRYSANTHEMUM:

Chrysanthemums are used to represent happiness and friendship.

GERBERA:

Gerberas describe the essence of purity and innocence, as described by their simplistic shape and adolescent aesthetic.

CARNATION:

Carnations are used to emulate a woman’s love and affection.

LISIANTHUS:

Lisianthus are used to symbolise appreciation, and are a display of thanks and gratitude.

LILY:

Lilies are representative of rebirth, which can be used both figuratively and literally (as in to celebrate parenthood). White lilies in particular are symbolic of purity.

ROSE:

Roses are slightly different. Rather than having an overarching meaning to them, each colour represents a slightly different sentiment.

Red: as the most commonly known symbol of Valentine’s Day and love, you guessed it, the red rose’s meaning is tied to both love and desire.

Pink: happiness and perfection.

Yellow: joy and friendship.

Purple: intrigue.

White: purity and innocence.

These are just a few of the most common flowers used by florists, and can be put together in whatever way best describes the sentiment you are trying to convey. The flower world is your oyster, so just have fun with your arrangements!
